Overview
American Fork City needed to replace approximately four blocks of aging waterline along Alpine Highway with a new 8-inch pipeline. When the City added sewer improvements during construction, the team adjusted the work plan and incorporated the added scope while keeping the project moving.
The work also had to fit two important community schedules. Alpine Highway was part of the Steel Days Parade route, and Forbes Elementary was within the construction area. We coordinated with school personnel, carefully scheduled connections, and limited disruptions for students and staff. The roadway was ready in time for the parade to proceed as planned.
Regular coordination with UDOT helped the work remain compliant and on schedule. We communicated with UDOT onsite and by phone, completed intersection crossings at night, and maintained traffic control in accordance with the approved Traffic Control Plan. We also addressed Hot Mix Asphalt requirements and paving limits. When profilograph testing identified areas that did not meet UDOT standards, we worked with the contractor to make the necessary corrections.
Field conditions also allowed the City to avoid unnecessary replacement. The existing pipe network was newer than expected and in suitable condition to connect to rather than replace. Franson Civil and City personnel evaluated the conditions together and made the decision in the field. At the City’s direction, the contractor added line stops where existing valves did not operate as expected.
Despite the added sewer work and firm schedule constraints, the project was completed under budget and before the Steel Days Parade. The coordinated approach protected the City’s investment while limiting impacts to Forbes Elementary and the surrounding community.
